I stayed here after the end of the salmon runs in 1996. The catch & lock on the door was broken, we didn't know we needed oil for the oil stove to keep warm, and there was no covered porch or windows back then. (The rangers were literally carrying the new front window to install on the cabin as we were hiking back & forth packing out our stuff to leave.) While we were there we had no moon, so the night was the blackest I'd ever seen in my life. (You literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face.) Since the lock was broken, we had to brace ourselves against the door in the middle of the night, as wolves were scratching and pushing to get in! We spent quite a long time that night watching our breath form clouds iin the freezing air as we were bracing ourselves against the door. Unfortunately, I had to go to the bathroom later that night. The visit from the wolves scared me enough, that I didn't want to hike in that blackness to the outhouse, so I peed on the porch straining to hear any little noise! Even with the tracks of wolves all around our cabin, and tracks of a mother and cub along the water, I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything. I hope I will be able to return some day and stay even longer!
